The opening night of this year’s musikprotokoll at steirischer herbst focuses on ECAS, the “European Cities of Advanced Sound”. Pål Asle Pettersen from Norway takes the audience on a journey into the microstructure of sounds. frufru from Austria play with a host of different instruments and acoustic objects, all no bigger than a shoe-box. Nils Henrik Asheim, also from Stavanger (Norway), the festival’s partner city for this ECAS evening, will be performing with the quartet version of the improvising Stavanger Kitchen Orchestra. And the bonaNza duo creates a turmoil in Austrian music history when Arnold Schönberg’s “Pierrot” is revived in a techno remix and Falco’s singing meets Dominican Merengue. Also from the sphere of the Numusic Festival in Stavanger are the works of British Natasha Barrett, who in the on-site | on-air | on-line context of Kunstradio intermingles acoustic worlds from Norway and Austria when the rushing of the North Sea merges with the babbling of the river Mur.
